Vision & Mission

Our Vision

To be recognized as a trusted resource for Best Practices in Sport Medicine, Exercise Science and Health Promotion.

Our Mission

Support health and performance through sport and exercise with the Best People, Best Practices, and Best Programs in Sport Medicine and Exercise Science for British Columbians.

Overview

SportMedBC serves the full continuum of British Columbians, spanning those oriented towards all levels of activity, from Recreation to Fitness to Performance.

It does so by providing access to Sport Medicine experts through its SportMed Directory of sport medical and paramedical practitioners, along with information on clinics employing qualified professionals. SportMedBC also serves to recruit, build and promote expertise in the field through SportMed Conferences and SportMed Professional Development, including its Job Board.

SportMedBC is the leading promoter of applied expertise through its Sport Science Library, featuring a series of books and publications produced by SportMedBC and some of its leading practitioners. The Library also includes other recommended books, Online Resources, and information in the areas of Sport Nutrition, Sport Safety, Sport Psychology and Strength & Conditioning.

For most active Canadians, SportMedBC comes to life through its Sport Training programs, including its popular and internationally-regarded SportMed RunWalk programs. Tens of thousands of active British Columbians have been exposed to the SportMed RunWalk curriculum through the SunRun InTraining clinics offered throughout the province. For athletes, SportMedBC also offers SportMed Performance, in which coordinated services are provided to athletes and teams, so as to assist with their physical, nutritional and mental preparation as well as to monitor optimal sport health status, prevent injuries and provide medical treatment referrals.

SportMedBC is governed by a ten-person Board of Directors. The Board, elected from our professional membership, is responsible for organizational policy and procedures and the general strategic direction of the association. Accountable to the Board is a professional management team, headed by an Executive Director.

The organization has delivered its mandate on the strength of program partnerships with the Province of British Columbia (Sport Branch), BC Ministry of Health (Aboriginal Health Directorate), the British Columbia Gaming Commission and ViaSport. It has reached new levels of professionalism and scope through its community programming and creative partnerships with organizations such as BC Soccer, Aboriginal Sports, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council, Fortius Sport & Health, The Vancouver Sun and The Province. Community partnerships exist with the BC Games Society, BC Medical Association (Athletics & Recreation Committee), BC Injury Prevention and Leadership Council, and Pacific Sport Northern BC.
