1983 | The BC SportsAid Program (Sports First-Aid) is initiated. |
1984 | Athletic Taping is incorporated as a module in the SportsAid Program. SportsAider (SportMedBC’s quarterly newsletter) is introduced. |
1985 | SportMedBC coordinates event medical support for the inaugural Vancouver Sun Run for the first time (a service that we still continue to provide to this day). |
1986 | Event medical and paramedical support for World Police and Fire Games is coordinated by SportMedBC. |
1988 | SportMedBC launches a comprehensive provincial anti-doping program under the leadership of Dr. Doug Clement.. |
1989 | BC’s “Best Ever” athlete development program features science and medicine support services coordinated by SportMedBC. |
1990 | Team BC’s Science and Medicine support program is initiated in partnership with the provincial government. |
1992 | BC SportsAid Program is delivered to registered fitness leaders as part of their compulsory training for certification. |
1995 | SportMedBC publishes the “Athlete Training Diary” in partnership with the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. |
1996 | SportMedBC relocates to Burnaby’s Ice Sports Centre. The InTraining Program is launched in association with The Vancouver Sun Run. |
1998 | SportMedBC publishes “The Beginning Runner’s Handbook”. |
1999 | SportMedBC partners with PacificSport (Vancouver) to develop a science and medicine support program featuring coordinated access to world class athlete and coach services. |
2000 | InTraining is launched in Victoria in association with the Times Colonist 10K extending the Program’s reach to over 4000 participants and volunteers. SportMedBC revises its mission and values statements in order to better position itself for the challenges of the changing sport medicine and science environment and to better serve the athletes of British Columbia. |
2001 | In partnership with Skate Canada, SportMedBC hosts the International Skating Union’s medical conference in Vancouver in conjunction with the World Figure Skating Championships. |
2002 | The Beginning Runner’s Journal is released by Greystone Press. |
2003 | SportMedBC develops and launches an innovative youth education program in partnership with the World Weightlifting Championships. |
2004 | SportMedBC’s headquarters relocates to West Broadway, joining the Telus Centre for Sport. |
2005 | In partnership with the BC Medical Association, SportMedBC creates “Docs-in-Training”, a program designed to help physicians become more physically active. The third edition of “The Beginning Runner’s Handbook” is released. |
2006 | Marathons and Half Marathons: The Beginning Runner’s Guide is published. SportMedBC launches an innovative program and partnership with the Healthy Heart Society of BC called hearts-in-training. SportMedBC launches half-marathon clinics in lead up to the Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon. Launched SportMed RunWalk Online – providing training programs (10K through half and full marathons) and coaching advice. SportMedBC awarded the BC Medical Association’s Excellence in Health Promotion citation. |
2007 | Walking for Fitness is published. Launched Sun Run InTraining in partnership with the Honour Your Health Challenge in Aboriginal communities across the province. SportMedBC begins a Brand Renovation process designed to reflect its leadership in Sport Medicine, Sport Science and Sport Training. |
2008 | SportMedBC.com – a new website and online community launched. Honour Your Health Challenge sets new record for largest team in the Vancouver Sun Run. |
2009 | SportMedBC named strategic founding partner of the MultiSport Centre of Excellence Foundation. |
2010 | SportMed Soccer introduced in partnership with BC Soccer |
2011 | HealthBeat Program is created SportMedBC partners with ISPARC to deliver the Aboriginal Healthy Living Activities, which includes the aboriginal RunWalk Program |
2012 | SportSmart injury prevention and performance initiative is launched Beginning Runner’s Handbook (4th Edition) launched worldwide |

2016 | InTraining Program celebrates its 20th year with the Vancouver Sun Run SportMedBC RunWalk partners with the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility at VGH to deliver the “Return to Everyday Activity in the Community and Home (REACH)” project. |
2017 | Provided Medical Manager for Team at 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg Aboriginal RunWalk corporate team celebrates its 10th year participating in the Vancouver Sun Run and continues to be one of the race’s largest. |
2018 | HealthBeat Equipment Kit and Training Program established to increase capacity around the province and expand the program’s reach. |
