Tilman von der Linde on Blister Prevention & Treatment Tips

The Causes:

New or well worn shoes, too tight or too loose, a rough spot in the shoe, socks that are too loose and bunch up, sweaty feet and wet shoes from running through puddles.

Here are a few Blister Blasters:

1. Invest in a new pair of micro fiber socks. They work better than cotton or wool.

2. Moisten a bar of soap with water and work it into the tight areas of the shoe.

3. Use Vaseline or Gel to lubricate the toes.

4. Stick low friction ENGO plastic blister prevention patches to friction areas in the shoe.

5. Wet shoes an issue, wear breathable neoprene booties over your socks.

6. Go barefoot to build up your stratum corneum, the protective outer layer of skin cells.

One note on Vaseline or Gel lubricants. These products will reduce friction for less than an hour. After that the friction and traction forces will rise to their usual levels and after 3 hours the friction coefficient is actually 35% greater than usual. Sport Med. Journal vol. 20)3)1995.

Have a Blister? Try This.

Broad Leaf Plantain: A common weed collected by gatherers of the Roman Legions and applied to the soldiers blistered feet at camp. The next morning the blisters were reduced and the skin had toughened.

Find a leaf, remove the ribs, squeeze and bruise the leaf, place it on your blister and cover it with a bandage.
