Taping vs. Bracing

An age old question for athletes… what’s more effective, taping or bracing?

Research shows that bracing is clearly the winner in the support category. It can also be more cost effective and it’s much easier for an athlete to apply a brace, than to tape that injured ankle, knee or hand.

However, a skilfully taped ankle will be comfortable and will reduce the size and bulk within a soccer boot. It’s also possible to modify and combine various taping techniques to meet the needs of the situation. Rather than carrying box after box of braces, a therapist, trainer, or individual who’s successfully completed a taping course can create almost anything from a few rolls of tape. Obviously, time and expertise is key, and it’s important to know the limitations of what can be done with either a brace or tape.
