Profile
Dr. Steven D. Stark’s 32 year medical career is marked by constantly challenging old ideas in the fields of biomechanics and sports medicine. He is the first Podiatrist in the province of British Columbia to specialize exclusively in functional and sports medicine, and was the first Podiatrist appointed to the Sports Medicine Council of British Columbia. (Dr Steven D. Stark – Podiatry, Orthotics, Sports Medicine – Vancouver, White Rock)
Born in New Mexico, raised in Texas, Dr. Stark holds Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degrees. He completed a three-year postgraduate surgical residency at the David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in California. He immigrated to Canada in 1980.
Dr. Stark’s clinic in South Surrey /White Rock B.C specializes in the treatment and prevention of injuries that are the result of biomechanical problems. These injuries are caused by the structural changes in the feet and the functional changes (muscle imbalances) in the lower extremities.
Much of Dr. Stark’s success has been as a result of implementing his unique “Stark Style” Orthotics to help correct structural changes, and his stretching methods to regain and maintain good muscle function. He wrote the bestselling book “The Stark Reality of Stretching” in 1997 which is now in its 5th edition.
He has facilitated both amateur and professional athletes with correct stretching techniques that have eliminated common training errors, improved performances, and prolonged careers. The response to his work and his clinic has been overwhelming, attracting patients from all over Canada and the United States, and from as far away as South East Asia, Australia, China, Japan, and Europe.
Dr. Stark has been involved with sports all his life. He was an amateur and professional boxer for ten years. He was the Texas Golden Gloves Lightheavy Weight champion in 1966 and 1967. His last professional fight was at the Forum in Los Angeles in 1972.
He continues to dedicate much of his spare time to his first love, horses – by training, rehabilitating and rescuing horses in need. He and his wife of 30 years Sylvia, share this passion and have adopted a rescued horse and 2 cats as part of their extended family.
As an active swimmer and golfer, Dr. Stark is a firm believer that the only way to stay healthy and continue with the activities that mean so much to him is to control the biomechanical changes we all develop over time.
Dr. Stark’s mission is to help people regain and maintain proper joint position, range of motion, function and stability utilizing orthotics and proper stretching!
