With no regulations on labeling or ingredients of nutritional supplements, how do athletes know what they are taking? This problem is highlighted by the case of Canadian bobsleigh pilot Serge Despres, a 2006 Olympian and Canadian champion. A doping test in 2007 placed him 0.9 nanograms per millilitre above the accepted limit for nandrolone, a naturally occurring substance in he body. This positive result was, most agree, the result of taking a nutritional supplement to help recover from a hip injury. The positive result still stands, however, and Despres has been banned from competing for 24...

CCES has conducted it’s first investigation and sanction against athlete support personnel since the new doping laws came into effect at the beginning of this year. For the first time, an athlete, coach and physician have been charged with committing an anti-doping rule violation. Geneviève Jeanson, a retired cyclist, has admitted to repeatedly using erythropoetin (EPO) during her cycling career. Ms. Jeanson implicated her coach, Andre Aubut, and her physician, Dr. Maurice Duquette, in the administration of a prohibited substance to a minor (Ms. Jeanson) and that they assisted, aided and...
So here's the deal. I was asked to become a member of the Ask the Experts Panel at the 11th hour back in January after completing the production of 10 video segments for the 2009 Sun Run. After accepting, I set a reasonable and achievable goal of writing 25 quality posts for the Sun Run - Ask the Experts Blog by April 19 as it is the 25th anniversary of the event. I started writing after returning from Europe in February and reached the 25 post mark at the beginning of April. However instead of stopping there, I reset my goal to write 40 blog posts and crushed that mark yesterday. How you do...

Some athletes will continue training right up to race day because they are afraid that they will loose their level of fitness if they start a tapering period before a race. Resting before a race is a tested recovery strategy that can improve your level of race readiness by as much as 5%. So if you haven't started tapering for the Sun Run yet, it is time to do so. Typically tapering allowances for shorter distances such as a 10K takes a few days to a week. The tapering period should follow your last longest run and basically means reducing your training load by 30 to 85% before the race...
After the Easter Bunny made the rounds over the weekend, I was left with a load of chocolates to last me till Christmas! Have a craving for Chocolate? Running will help! A study published in the September 2008 edition of Appetite, suggests that if you are burning a lot of calories through sport, you can also eat chocolate. Eating chocolate helps to improve your mood and in turn will improve the effectiveness of your training sessions. The study also showed that chocolate cravings were significantly reduced after running and after other forms of physical activities. Meaning that if you have a...
