10th Annual RBC GranFondo Whistler Race Recap
Over 5,000 cyclists took part in the 10th edition of the RBC GranFondo Whistler on Saturday September 7, 2019. Riders were treated to ideal riding temperatures and mostly sunny skies as they took on the 122km course from Vancouver to Whistler along the iconic Sea to Sky highway.
Known for its steep climbs, lightning-quick descents, and incredible views this world class cycling event presents a grueling challenge for both the world’s top cyclists and weekend warriors alike. However, there was a little extra on the line this year with the race serving as an official UCI Gran Fondo World Series event, making it a qualifying event for the 2020 World Championships.
The UCI Gran Fondo World Championships are the pinnacle of Gran Fondo competition. The event is run each year in different locations between local organisers and the UCI – cycling’s global governing body, attracting cyclists from around the world. The 2020 Championships will take place on the same established 122km RBC GranFondo Whistler course.
Brendan Armstrong of the Red Truck Racing Team took home first place on the men’s side with a blistering time of 3:13:40, while fellow teammate Megan Rathwell paced the women with a finishing time of 3:25:04, a full five minutes ahead of her next closest competitor.
This year also marked the second year that SportMedBC partnered with the RBC GranFondo Whistler to deliver a 12-week training program for beginner and intermediate cyclists. Starting in June, Fondo Clinics were offered at 13 locations across the Lower Mainland. The program was a huge success with 180 riders taking part, a 41% increase over last year.
Led by expert riders, participants meet with their groups for weekly training sessions throughout the summer, learning everything from proper rider etiquette and training techniques, to repairing a flat tire and the art of bicycle maintenance.
SportMedBC would like to thank and congratulate all the clinic coaches, sweeps, and participants for a great summer of training.
We hope to see you again next year!
