China’s ascent to global sporting success is a remarkable story. After an absence of 34 years, Chinese athletes arrived at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984 as sporting minnows. Twenty-four years later, many experts expect them to top the medal table at their home Olympics which officially opened yesterday, relegating the United States to second place for the first time since 1992.
