On November 13, 2020 Fortius Sport & Health in Burnaby announced that they would be permanently shutting down all business operations. Citing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as a major contributing factor to the shutdown, the Fortius Foundation is currently in the final stages of completing a sale of the building.
“The realities of trying to operate this complicated and dynamic business have been difficult,” their website reads. “With the added pressures that the COVID-19 pandemic put on Fortius Sport & Health, and many other businesses, it became something we could no longer sustain.”
Fortius will continue to operate and be taking new appointments and bookings until December 31, 2020.
As of writing, it has not been announced who the new owners of the building will be and what impact that will have on tenants such as ourselves, who rent commercial space inside Fortius. SportMedBC staff have been working remotely since the beginning of the pandemic. We will provide any updates as soon as we have more information.
The building opened in a 2013 as a 148,000 sq-ft state-of-the-art athlete development centre. Fortius founder and chairman Scott Cousens made a donation of $23 million -the single-largest philanthropic gift in Canadian sport history – to create the Fortius Foundation. The land, building and equipment are owned by the Fortius Foundation, a registered charity.
