As everyone is gearing up for the Vancouver Sun Run, SportMedBC and the Vancouver Sun are featuring some Sun Run InTraining Leaders and Coordinators’ and their favourite trails and runs.
Chris Rickaby is a Sun Run clinic coordinator (Queens Park and Centennial).
“When I was younger, I never enjoyed sprinting, but I always loved to run alongside the ocean on the beach. After moving to Vancouver from Victoria 25 years ago, running was put aside for work and family. Seven years ago, I started as a participant in an InTraining Clinic in New Westminster. The following year I became a leader, and five years later, I took on the role of Clinic Coordinator.
The clinics bring together such a great mix of people – those who have recently had health issues, those who have never been active, and those who come back annually. There’s something for everyone and I truly believe that with a great team of leaders and willing participants, it’s amazing how much you can accomplish.
My favourite run starts at Queen’s Park. There, you can see signs of spring – bulbs starting to pop up, squirrels and children at the playground. My run continues through the park down to the New Westminster Quay. I love to run along the water and see the boats on the Fraser River. A quick dash through the old heritage part of town along Columbia Street, back up to Queen’s Park and I’m done… refreshed in mind and body!”
